Before anyone gets up in arms at me, let me say this: This is just my opinion. All babies are different. Everyone has different diaper preferences. My word is not the gospel truth, merely an opinion and recommendation. If you disagree, please leave your feedback in the comments! Tell me (and all the new moms reading the comments) what diapers you liked best and least!
To preface this, I went on a baby stockpiling RAMPAGE when I was pregnant. I wanted to have a huge supply of everything we’d need before we became a single income family.
There was somewhere around 2000 diapers stockpiled. (I know)
I bought all sizes, all the brands so I could see what worked for my girl. My husband and I anticipated skin sensitivity, and were advised by a friend that sometimes Luvs bothered newborns but not older babies. With that in mind, I stocked up on Pampers & Huggies in Newborn & size 1, then got primarily Huggies and Luvs size 2-3 with a few extra boxes of Pampers in case I had a favorite. I was gifted a package of Target’s Up & Up brand in 3s as well.
The hospital we had Lilian at supplied us with Pampers Swaddlers. We loved them at first! Our girl was only 6lb 3oz at birth, so most of all we loved how they fit her skinny little legs. There was never an issue with blowouts.
When we ran out of Newborn size Pampers, we tried Huggies little snugglers. They were SO much more absorbent, it blew our minds! We still liked Pampers of course, but Huggies absorbency was leaps and bounds better. With Huggies being a few cents cheaper per diaper, we bought more of them when we ran out if newborn size.
Size 2 came around. Time to try Luvs! We knew within 2 diapers that they were too thin and cheaply made for us. Lily peed and pooped straight through them. Literally THROUGH them. I have an image burned into my memory of an especially bad blowout where she seeped through a Luvs. *shudder*
All the Luvs were promptly exchanged for Huggies. See ya never.
She hit size 3, and we got to try the Target brand. Lots of friends and moms on The Bump app raved about them, comparing them to Huggies, so I was optimistic. Lilian had the worst reaction to them 😥 The rash was terrible. Because of that generic diaper crisis, we still haven’t tried another store’s brand.
Lilian is in size 4 now. She wears Huggies Snug & Dry because she’s got big chubby thighs like her mama. At night, she sleeps in Huggies OverNites. We LOVE those things. She never needs a diaper change in the middle of the night in them.
I recently caught Pampers on too good of a deal to pass up. We grabbed their Baby Dry & Cruisers line. The Baby Dry ones small SO strongly of an added baby powder fragrance. Its awful. Lily gets minor irritation, but nothing too severe. We haven’t opened the Cruisers pack yet, but since the smell is so strong I’ll probably just donate them.
Price wise, the 4 brands I’ve discussed are as follows (unit price is calculated using Target.com’s pricing for size 4):
- Pampers $0.27 (Giant pack $40)
- Huggies $0.22 (super pack $25)
- Luvs $0.17 (Giant pack $25)
- Up & Up $0.15 (bulk plus pack $29)
I calculated using Target’s pricing to be fair, but I believe the 3 other brands are cheaper on Amazon.
Diapers ranked for absorbency:
- Up & Up
For our chunky thigh girl that makes jarringly large tinkles, Huggies snug & dry is best.
